changing things up

I got back to some paintings that has been waiting for me. I had prepped some wood panels with plaster –  in this case texturing one with random letter stamps and the outline of a woman.

The plaster cured a while ago but I did not approach this panel again until yesterday. Late last night I painted the first layer of colour. This morning I tried not to over-think it. The colours seemed more or less right to me but somehow pale. I considered painting with stronger colours but then decided to mix some blue into the final coat of gloss medium and got some nice toning. I player with her purple hair, adding highlights of yellow and red. Usually I draw some kind of facial features, often closed eyes as my figures tend to be dreamers. 🙂  This time I decided to leave the face blank – not (I hope) to show a state of blankness but to suggest everything was outside of her, yet from her,  mixing it up in the ether. I’m trying to write a poem about her and it will take some time to find its shape.  In the meantime here is the beginning “poetry sketch”:

outside herself

words free float
reform into different ideas
languages
forms

all she needs
to do
is inhale
to bring back
her self
